The
name Sagaponack comes from a Shinnecock Indian word meaning
"land of the big ground nuts." Of course, to the Indians
"ground nuts" were potatoes. It was first settled
in 1656 by Josiah Stanborough who built a house in the area
known as Sagg, today called Sagaponack.
Sagaponack
is a part of Bridgehampton, the name was given to the area following
the creation of the parish of that name out of the settlements
named Sagg and Mecox in 1699. This parish was named for the
Bridge that was built to connect these two settlements. Since
that time the area has been a whaling, farming, and resort community.
